Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Markers for field boundaries and zones
  • Balls for possession play
Setup
  1. Area: 30x20 yard area divided into two 30x10 yard halves with markers
  2. Team Red: 6 red outfield players start spaced evenly across their own half, with 2 designated to enter the opposing half as defenders on the coach's signal
  3. Team Blue: 6 blue outfield players start spaced evenly across their own half in possession of the ball, with 2 designated to enter the opposing half as defenders on the coach's signal
  4. Equipment: Markers outlining the 30x20 yard field boundary and the dividing line between the two 10-yard halves, balls placed in the starting team's zone for possession play
Instructions
  1. On the coach's signal, two defenders enter the opposing zone to win the ball.
  2. The attacking team tries to maintain possession for as long as possible.
  3. Once possession is lost, move the ball to the other zone for the teams to switch roles.
  4. Rotate defenders each round.
  5. Track the time each team retains possession, and the highest total time wins.
Coaching Points
  • Encourage effective communication.
  • Ensure players maintain good angles and distances for support.
  • Focus on quick decision-making on and off the ball.
  • Emphasize a good first touch and keeping the head up.
  • Promote constant movement and agile footwork.
  • Highlight the quality, timing, and disguise of passes.
  • Encourage players to avoid forcing passes and keep the ball moving.
  • Stress the importance of composure and patient possession play in tight areas.
  • Encourage proactive support and awareness of passing options.
  • Reinforce crisp, flat passes combined with quick movement to open spaces.
  • Highlight defenders' work rate to regain possession quickly.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the size of the playing area to increase pressure.
2. Add an additional defender in the opponents' zone.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the playing area for more space.
2. Allow only one defender to enter the opposing zone.
3. Permit set patterns for attacking to facilitate easier ball movement.
