Equipment
- Cones for marking the playing area
- Small gates/goals, one at each end
- Balls
Setup
- Area: 33x33 yard area marked with cones
- Goals: One small gate/goal centred on each end line
- Team Red: 1 red outfield player starts on the sideline with a ball, ready to throw to a teammate
- Team Blue: 1 blue outfield player starts on the sideline with a ball, ready to throw to a teammate
- Equipment: 4 cones marking the corners of the 33x33 yard area, one small gate at each end line, balls stacked at the sideline for use
Instructions
- Players throw the ball to a teammate, who heads it and attempts to score by directing it through the opposing gate.
- One player per team starts with the ball from the sideline.
- The thrower stands still and throws the ball to a teammate.
- The receiving player attempts to head the ball through the opponent's gate.
- If the ball is not headed through the goal, retrieve and repeat the sequence.
- Alternate roles between players to practice both throwing and heading.
Coaching Points
- Keep eyes on the ball from throw to header.
- Use controlled and precise heading technique.
- Time jumps or movements correctly for effective headers.
- Ensure stable footing during throws.
- Direct headers accurately towards the gate.
- Encourage communication between thrower and header.
- Reinforce safe catching techniques post-header.
- Maintain intensity and quick decisions throughout.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the size of the gates to increase difficulty.
2. Increase the distance between the thrower and header.
3. Limit the number of steps before heading.
Make it easier:
1. Allow players to take a few steps while throwing.
2. Enlarge the gates for easier scoring.
3. Decrease the distance between thrower and header.
