Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • - Cones
  • - Balls
  • - Goals
Setup
  1. Area: 40x30 yard area marked with cones
  2. Goals: One goal centred on each end line
  3. Team Red: 2 red outfield players, 1 starting in the centre of the area as the initial defender and 1 starting at one end line ready to join as the second defender
  4. Team Blue: 2 blue outfield players, 1 starting in the centre of the area as the initial attacker and 1 starting at the opposite end line ready to join as the second attacker
  5. Equipment: Cones marking the corners of the 40x30 yard area, 1 goal positioned on each end line, balls for serving into the middle
Instructions
  1. Begin with the white player serving the ball to the red player.
  2. Play starts in a 1v1 scenario.
  3. If the defender gains possession, they counterattack the opposite goal.
  4. Add an attacker or defender to progress to 2v1 and then 2v2.
  5. Keep each phase to a maximum of 15 seconds.
  6. Award two points for a defender's goal and one for an attacker's.
Coaching Points
  • Quickly close down the ball.
  • Maintain good body shape: low and side-on.
  • Communicate effectively with teammates, including the goalkeeper.
  • Exercise patience when pressing.
  • Be decisive about when to tackle.
  • Focus on blocking and redirecting shots away from central areas.
  • Recognize opportunities early to force errors.
  • Jockey with staggered feet and bent knees.
  • Use controlled 1v1 defending skills.
  • Counterattack decisively with possession.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the playing area to increase intensity.
2. Add more attackers to create 3v2 situations.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the playing area to allow more space for defending.
2. Start with only 1v1 without progressing to 2v1 or 2v2.
3. Provide the defender with a second chance even if initially beaten.
