Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • 1 Ball
  • 1 Cone
Setup
  1. Area: 10x10 yard space between server and working player
  2. Group: 1 red outfield player (working player) starts opposite the server, ready to receive the ball
  3. Coach: 1 grey server positioned behind the cone, 10 yards from the working player, holding a ball
  4. Equipment: 1 cone placed 10 yards from the server's starting point, marking the server's position
Instructions
  1. The server throws the ball to the working player using a lofted throw.
  2. The player cushions the ball using the laces of one foot.
  3. The player then volleys the ball back to the server aiming for the server’s waist area.
  4. Ensure the player remains on their toes and adjusts position to align with the ball.
  5. Repeat using both feet, checking towards the cone before each throw.
Coaching Points
  • Relax the foot on contact.
  • Focus on cushioning and controlled first touches.
  • Communicate consistently with your partner.
  • Position yourself in line with the incoming ball.
  • Ensure precise and consistent passes back.
  • Use designated body parts effectively - e.g., feet, thighs, chest.
  • Aim for high-quality serves at varied heights.
  • Maintain realistic distances between server and player.
  • Develop ball familiarity through repetitive practice.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the throw distance slightly.
2. Introduce a time limit for each volley.
3. Alternate feet for each repetition.
Make it easier:
1. Allow a bounce before the player volleys back.
2. Decrease the distance between server and player.
3. Focus solely on one foot before adding the other.
