Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Balls
  • Cones/Markers for boundaries
  • Small Goals
Setup
  1. Area: 30x35 yard area marked with cones
  2. Goals: One small goal centred on each end line
  3. Team Red: 3 red outfield players start at one end of the area with a ball to begin each phase
  4. Team Blue: 3 blue outfield players start spread out at the opposite end of the area
  5. Equipment: Balls, cones/markers marking the boundaries of the 30x35 yard area, one small goal at each end line
Instructions
  1. The red team lofts a diagonal pass to the blue team.
  2. The blue team controls the ball and attempts to score in the small goal defended by the red team.
  3. The red team must close down the ball quickly, defend as a unit, and prevent the blue team from scoring.
  4. If the red team wins the ball, they should quickly transition to attack the goal at the opposite end.
Coaching Points
  • Close on the ball quickly.
  • Constant communication among defenders.
  • Maintain concentration.
  • Be agile and ready on your feet.
  • Guide play predictably.
  • Nearest player presses the ball.
  • Stay compact in defense.
  • Win possession if possible.
  • Achieve and maintain compactness centrally and wide.
  • Understand pressing and defensive shape.
  • Balance between pressure, cover, and support.
  • Quick transition from defense to attack.
  • Good individual defending techniques like jockeying and tackling.
  • Effective communication for team coordination.
  • Recognize and execute individual and team responsibilities.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the size of the playing area to increase pressure.
2. Limit the defending team to a certain number of passes before they can attack.
3. Require the defending team to touch the ball three times before attacking.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the playing area for more space.
2. Allow unlimited passes for the defending team before they can attack.
3. Remove the requirement for the red team to play a lofted pass to start.
