Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • - Balls
  • - Cones (if the 18-yard box is not marked)
Setup
  1. Area: 18-yard box marked with cones
  2. Group: 4 red outfield players positioned as a back four spaced across the 18-yard box
  3. Coach: 1 grey coach positioned outside the box with several balls ready to serve
  4. Equipment: Cones marking the 18-yard box, balls for serving
Instructions
  1. The coach serves the ball high into the box.
  2. Defenders perform headers, aiming to direct the ball to a teammate starting a counter-attack.
  3. Ensure all defenders are engaged and mimic game scenarios as much as possible.
  4. Players breaking forward should anticipate the header and initiate quick transitions.
Coaching Points
  • Use the back and neck muscles to power the header
  • Maintain communication among teammates
  • Keep eyes on the ball and use the forehead for contact
  • Ensure proper body shape and light footwork
  • Head the bottom half of the ball to generate height and distance
  • Practice both one-footed and two-footed jumping as needed
  • Develop confidence in heading with practice
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Introduce an opposing player to challenge for the ball.
2. Increase the speed or angle of the serve.
3. Require headers to reach a specific target area for a successful transition.
Make it easier:
1. Serve the ball slower or from a closer distance.
2. Allow defenders to catch and throw the ball initially to build confidence.
3. Use fewer defenders to reduce decision-making pressure.
