Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Cones
  • Full-sized goal
  • Balls
  • Coach to serve balls
  • Goalkeeper
  • Player
Setup
  1. Area: Full pitch (goal area only, no bounded playing area)
  2. Goals: One full-sized goal
  3. Group: 1 player positioned beside the central cones, ready to receive the goalkeeper's deflection
  4. Group GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned between the two central cones, 5 yards apart, on the goal line
  5. Coach: 1 grey coach positioned centrally in front of the goalkeeper, ready to serve balls
  6. Equipment: Two diagonal lines of cones set up in front of the goal, with 2 balls placed in front of one of the central cones
Instructions
  1. The goalkeeper steps towards the coach and gets into set position.
  2. The coach serves the ball for a mid-diving save.
  3. The goalkeeper dives over the balls, deflecting the ball to the nearby player with the top hand.
  4. Move the balls to the alternate side and repeat the drill.
Coaching Points
  • Maintain a forward and balanced set position.
  • Decide early on your course of action.
  • Stand large and still in 1v1 situations.
  • Expect shots and cover all angles.
  • React quickly with knees slightly bent.
  • Assess the flight and pace of the ball.
  • Glide into the prepared position.
  • Demonstrate positive takeoff and collection.
  • Stay light on feet, ensuring effective footwork.
  • Build confidence for dealing with different ball heights and speeds.
  • Focus on quality technique and explosive actions.
  • Narrow angles efficiently.
  • Perform diving saves effectively.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase serving speed and intensity.
2. Decrease reaction time by serving balls more rapidly.
3. Add a second player to challenge the goalkeeper post-save.
Make it easier:
1. Start with slower-paced serves.
2. Use larger balls for easier handling.
3. Reduce the distance between the cones to simplify footwork.
