Equipment
- Balls
- Cones
- Four small gates
Setup
- Area: 15x15 yard area marked with cones
- Goals: Four small gates, two positioned at each end of the area
- Team Red: 1 red outfield player (defender) starts in close proximity to the attacker within the area
- Team Blue: 1 blue outfield player (attacker) starts in the centre of the area, facing the server
- Coach: 1 grey server positioned at the side of the area with a ball, ready to pass to the attacker
- Equipment: Cones marking the 15x15 area, four small gates positioned at the ends of the area, balls with the server
Instructions
- Server passes to the attacker.
- Attacker receives, attempts to turn, and dribble through a gate.
- Defender marks tightly, aiming to win possession or push attacker away from the gates.
- If the defender wins the ball, they counterattack by dribbling through the opposite gates.
- Rotate roles after each attempt or set period.
Coaching Points
- Approach the ball quickly and with intent.
- Communicate effectively with teammates.
- Maintain concentration throughout the drill.
- Use a low, side-on body position.
- Stay light on feet for quick movements.
- Guide attacker predictably.
- Exercise patience and wait for the right moment to tackle.
- Focus on controlling distance while pressing.
- Jockey with feet staggered, knees bent.
- Avoid letting attacker see ball behind their legs to prevent turn.
- Be ready to freeze play to discuss technique.
- Emphasize positioning and body shape.
- Encourage intelligent decision-making on when to challenge or contain.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the pace of the server's pass.
2. Reduce the space between attacker and defender.
3. Limit time allowed for the attacker to score.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the defender’s initial distance from the attacker.
2. Allow a static start for the attacker.
3. Use larger gates to increase scoring chances.
