Instructions
- Teams compete to score by getting the ball through their opponent's gate/goals.
- Defenders work to maintain compactness and communication.
- Players must quickly identify and close down the player in possession.
- Encourage the defending team to make play predictable by blocking passing lanes and controlling the attacker's direction.
- Rotate roles at regular intervals to ensure balanced skill development.
Coaching Points
- Communicate consistently and clearly.
- Maintain concentration throughout the drill.
- Use a good body shape: low, side-on stance.
- Close down the player with the ball quickly and effectively.
- Be patient and stay compact as a unit.
- Try to win the ball whenever possible.
- Make attacking plays predictable by controlling their options.
- Cover attacking players effectively and identify passing lanes swiftly.
- Work together to double-team the player with the ball when possible.
- Defenders must adjust their angles and distances to support the pressuring defender.
- Force the attacker in a direction that supports your team's defensive shape.
- Use pauses to correct or reinforce methodology during play.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the playing area to increase defensive pressure.
2. Limit the number of touches attackers can take.
3. Add an extra attacker to create a 4v5 scenario.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the size of the playing area to reduce pressure on defenders.
2. Allow defenders to use an additional supporting player.
3. Permit defenders to intercept with hands for practice.
