Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Cones
  • Footballs
  • Bibs (optional)
Setup
  1. Area: No single fixed area; setup varies by variation from a 30x5 yard lane, to two 3x3 yard boxes 30 yards apart, to open space 50-60 yards across, with no goals used.
  2. Group: 2 outfield players (partners), positioned facing each other at the distance required by the active variation (e.g. behind the gates, at either end of the lane, by each box, or 50-60 yards apart for long ball).
  3. Equipment: 4 cones forming two gates of 2 cones each, 5 yards apart, for gated passing; 2 cones set 10 yards apart forming a loop for looped passing; cones marking a 30x5 yard lane for driven passing; cones marking two 3x3 yard boxes set 30 yards apart for two box touch; footballs used throughout by each pair.
Instructions
  1. Gated Passing: Stand behind respective gates; pass through the cones aiming for precise centre hits.
  2. Looped Passing: Move in a set direction, receive on one foot, tap across, and pass with the other.
  3. Driven Ball: Pass down the lane using laces, keeping it low and alternating feet.
  4. Two Box Touch: Clip ball into opposite box; control first touch within your box and return pass.
  5. Long Ball: Pass accurately across distance using both feet, focusing on consistent contact.
Coaching Points
  • Focus on precise first touch to keep the ball within reach.
  • Ensure passes go through the centre of each gate.
  • Maintain correct body positioning for seamless passing flow.
  • Adjust tap strength to avoid over/under-hitting.
  • Drive the ball low and direct in the lane.
  • Switch feet to develop technique on both sides.
  • In box drills, land ball in target area consistently.
  • Control first touch to avoid heavy receptions.
  • On long passes, aim for accuracy and replicable contact.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Implement a time cap (e.g., complete 10 precise passes each drill).
2. Introduce requirement to restart if ball rolls prematurely in gated passing.
3. Progress to one-touch in looped passing once consistent.
Make it easier:
1. Reduce gate/cone/box distance for closer practice (e.g., gates less than 5 yards).
2. Restrict to two-touch passes until control improves.
3. Widen driven lane to 7 yards to simplify height and direction control.
