Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
- Balls
- Cones for marking the 25x25 yard area
Setup
- Area: 25x25 yard square marked with cones
- Team Blue: 2 blue outfield players (attackers) start inside the square, each with a ball
- Team Red: 2 red outfield players (defenders) start spaced evenly around the outside of the square
- Equipment: 4 cones marking the corners of the 25x25 yard square, 1 ball per attacker positioned inside the square
Instructions
- Attackers begin by completing five consecutive passes.
- After five passes, one defender enters to try and win possession.
- Each time attackers complete another set of five passes, a new defender joins.
- Defenders collaborate to win or disrupt possession.
- Rotate roles after a set duration or successful defense.
Coaching Points
- Close down the ball quickly while communicating with teammates.
- Maintain light footwork and stay alert.
- Force attackers into predictable plays with good body positioning.
- Quickly assign the nearest player to challenge the ball.
- Ensure team remains compact and organized.
- Apply pressing and maintain defensive shape with appropriate distances.
- Provide covering support, maintain balance, and focus on rapid recovery.
- Encourage continuous communication among defending players.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Allow attackers to move freely beyond the initial grid.
2. Decrease the number of passes needed before an additional defender joins.
Make it easier:
1. Increase the play area to reduce pressure on attackers.
2. Allow less-skilled defenders to enter earlier or with restrictions on defensive challenges.
