Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Cones
  • Full-size goal
  • Three small goals
  • Footballs
Setup
  1. Area: 60x40 yard area marked with cones
  2. Goals: One full-size goal at one end, three 3-yard wide small goals spaced across the opposite end line
  3. Team Red: 4 red outfield players (defenders) start spaced across their own half in front of the full-size goal
  4. Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of the full-size goal
  5. Team Blue: 5 blue outfield players (attackers/midfielders) start spaced across the half nearest the three small goals
  6. Equipment: Cones marking the 60x40 yard area, one full-size goal frame at one end, three 3-yard wide small goal frames spaced along the opposite end line
Instructions
  1. Start the practice with an attacker attempting to breach the defense.
  2. Attackers aim to score in the full-size goal.
  3. Defenders attempt to disrupt plays, regain possession, and counter-attack towards the small goals.
  4. The drill continues until a goal is scored, or the ball exits the playing area.
  5. Rotate players to ensure equal practice time in different roles.
Coaching Points
  • Foster continuous communication within the defensive unit.
  • Maintain concentration and readiness.
  • Adopt a side-on, low defensive stance for agility.
  • Direct play predictably to desired areas.
  • Exercise patience in defense, not diving into tackles.
  • Keep defensive shape compact to restrict space.
  • Cover and support each other by forming defensive triangles.
  • Apply immediate pressure on the ball carrier.
  • Communicate to coordinate pressing and covering.
  • Master transitioning quickly to a counter-attacking mode.
  • Decide whether to channel attackers inside or outside based on the situation.
  • Understand individual and collective defensive responsibilities.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the number of defenders.
2. Allow attackers additional passes.
3. Enlarge the playing area.
Make it easier:
1. Add an extra defender.
2. Reduce the number of attackers or midfielders.
3. Decrease the size of the small goals.
