Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • Two poles
  • Multiple balls
Setup
  1. Area: Six-yard box area
  2. Group: Goalkeeper only drill, no outfield players
  3. Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned between the two poles on the edge of the six-yard box
  4. Coach: 2 grey coaches/servers positioned outside the box, each holding several balls
  5. Equipment: Two poles positioned on the edge of the six-yard box, spaced apart with the goalkeeper starting between them
Instructions
  1. The coach lofts a ball high towards the goalkeeper.
  2. The goalkeeper moves into position, jumps, and catches the ball at the highest point possible.
  3. The goalkeeper returns the ball to the coach.
  4. The goalkeeper uses footwork to navigate around one pole before receiving a lofted ball from the additional server.
  5. Repeat the sequence, alternating the server as needed.
Coaching Points
  • Use correct catching technique by positioning hands early.
  • Command the six-yard box with clear communication.
  • Catch the ball at its highest point using straight arm preparation.
  • Assess the flight and pace of the ball accurately.
  • Ensure light, quick footwork into position.
  • Maintain focus and organization throughout.
  • Exhibit confidence in handling balls from various heights and speeds.
  • Control timing for positive take-off and collection.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Reduce the time before the ball is delivered, requiring quicker reactions.
2. Increase the distance between the poles to enhance footwork difficulty.
3. Use varied ball trajectories to challenge assessment and adjustment skills.
Make it easier:
1. Allow more time for the goalkeeper to assess and catch the ball.
2. Decrease the distance between the poles for simpler footwork.
3. Provide consistent ball lofts to build initial confidence.
