Goalkeeper High Ball Distribution

Train goalkeepers to effectively gather and distribute high balls to create scoring opportunities.

Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
  • 2 regulation-sized goals
  • Multiple balls
Setup
  1. Area: Full pitch, using the penalty area at each end for play.
  2. Goals: One regulation-sized goal at each end of the pitch.
  3. Team Red: 2 red outfield attackers start just outside the penalty area at one end, ready to receive the goalkeeper's distribution.
  4. Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line at that end.
  5. Team Blue: 1 blue defender starts inside the penalty area at the opposite end, in front of the goal.
  6. Team Blue GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line at the opposite end.
  7. Coach: 1 grey coach/server positioned around the edge of the penalty area to deliver high crosses.
  8. Equipment: 2 regulation-sized goals, multiple balls with the coach/server.
Instructions
  1. Coach/server delivers high balls into the penalty area.
  2. Goalkeeper catches the ball above their head.
  3. Goalkeeper distributes quickly to one of the red attackers.
  4. Red team attacks against the defender and goalkeeper at the opposite goal.
  5. Play restarts from the coach/server once the ball goes out of play.
Coaching Points
  • Use correct technique to catch high balls at the apex of their flight.
  • Approach ball with a leap off one foot.
  • Maintain clear and loud communication.
  • Assess the trajectory and speed of the incoming ball.
  • Position body efficiently and stay light on feet.
  • Focus on timing when collecting the ball.
  • Execute accurate and timely ball distribution.
  • Stay organized and aware during play.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Increase the number of defenders.
2. Limit the time attackers have to score.
Make it easier:
1. Add another attacker to create a numerical advantage.
2. Allow goalkeeper unlimited time to distribute.
