Equipment
- Supply of balls
- Cones for setting up the playing area and goals
- Mini cone goals
- Goalkeeper for Zone 3
Setup
- Area: 50x50 yard square divided into four equal 25x25 yard zones
- Goals: Zone 1 has one mini cone goal, Zone 2 has a 5-yard goal square, Zone 3 has a 10-yard cone goal, Zone 4 has two mini cone goals
- Team Red: 8 red outfield players in 4 pairs, one pair defending each zone's goal(s)
- Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper positioned on the goal line of the Zone 3 cone goal
- Team Blue: 4 blue outfield players in 2 pairs, starting together at the center of the grid
- Equipment: cones marking the outer 50x50 square and the four internal zone boundaries, a mini cone goal in Zone 1, cones marking a 5-yard goal square in Zone 2, cones marking a 10-yard goal in Zone 3, two mini cone goals in Zone 4, and a supply of balls stacked at the center of the grid
Instructions
- Each attacking pair collects a ball from the center and chooses a zone to attack.
- They attempt to score in the goals specific to that zone.
- If successful, they retrieve another ball from the center and attack a different zone.
- If they fail or lose possession, switch roles with the defenders.
- The practice continues until all balls are used.
Coaching Points
- Maintain close ball control.
- Make quick decisions about when and where to dribble.
- Focus on effective end products: passes, shots, or shielding.
- Provide ample support and communication with teammates.
- Move the ball into open spaces, away from defenders.
- Exhibit a positive mindset and confidence in dribbling.
- Use techniques like step-overs and feints to deceive defenders.
- Accelerate quickly to exploit spaces.
- Utilize both feet to improve versatility in dribbling.
- Quickly change directions if faced by opposition.
- Execute proper techniques to receive the ball and exploit 1v1 situations.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Limit the time attackers have to score in each zone.
2. Add additional defenders in each zone to increase pressure.
3. Encourage attackers to perform specific dribbling skills before scoring.
Make it easier:
1. Remove one defender from each zone.
2. Allow attackers unlimited time to score in each zone.
3. Widen the goals in Zones 1 and 4 to facilitate easier scoring.
