Equipment, Setup & Instructions
Equipment
- Cones
- Bibs (Blue and Green)
- Footballs
- Goals or small goals
Setup
- Area: 10-15 yard wide area marked by two parallel lines of cones (simulating the width of a penalty area), with two wide channels marked down each side leading to goals at the ends.
- Goals: One small goal at each end of the area for the condition game.
- Team Red: 5 red outfield defenders start in their own half in a back-five shape, with one full-back positioned in each of the two wide channels.
- Team Red GK: 1 yellow goalkeeper starts on the goal line of the red team's goal, restarting the condition game with the ball.
- Team Blue: 5 blue outfield players start in the attacking half, with one winger positioned in each of the two wide channels.
- Equipment: Cones marking the two parallel lines 10-15m apart and the two wide channels, additional cones marking the attacker and defender start points of the 1v1 area at one end, cones marking three triangle passing stations (three outside players and one inside player each), red and blue bibs, footballs, and small goals at each end.
Instructions
- Conduct a dynamic warm-up through cone lanes, emphasizing speed and direction changes.
- Perform 1v1 races with Blue defending first, followed by Green attacking with the ball.
- Swap roles and repeat, incorporating a ball for the attackers.
- Transition to triangle passing in groups of four, rotating middle players.
- Progress the drill to a Rondo, with the central player attempting to win the ball.
- Implement a condition game, starting from the keeper, pushing for wide play first.
- For the channel game, emphasize playing to the wing before attacking goals.
- Encourage continuous movement and early wide play throughout.
Coaching Points
- Accelerate with control; balance during quick starts.
- Sharp direction changes maintain agility.
- Execute decisive moves in 1v1 situations.
- Quick play after receiving; avoid holding the ball.
- Receive on back foot to maintain momentum and scan early.
- Use wide positions for attack to stretch defense.
- Create passing angles by moving off cones.
- Maintain ball movement and support in the Rondo.
- Encourage wide play early from the keeper.
- Attack immediately upon gaining possession.
- In channels, get wide first and progress upfield.
Variations
Make it harder:
1. Impose a time limit for Rondo or passing sequences with limited touches.
2. Require attackers to finish with a shot/pass after beating a defender in 1v1.
3. Allow an additional defender to press in the channel game.
Make it easier:
1. Shorten the sprint and finish area for 1v1.
2. Temporarily remove the middle defender in passing triangles.
3. Permit an extra supporting player in the channel after a wide pass.
